Old Bridge
Following the Neighbourhood Plan proposals have been put together to make the Old Bridge a more appealing place to visit.
The Parish Council is proposing to make “Improvements to the Newton Flotman Old Bridge” which was identified as a Community action project in section 9 of the Newton Flotman Neighbourhood Plan (adopted October 2025) (https://newtonflotman-pc.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Newton-Flotman-NP-ADOPTED-October-2025-COMPRESSED-1.pdf).
In section 6.8 on page 38 of the Newton Flotman Neighbourhood Plan the old bridge was identified as a “site for visual, environmental and amenity enhancement (including hard and soft landscaping improvements) possibly to enable community use. Should an opportunity arise … there is community support for … seating, planters and/or public open space.”
The Parish Council has been working to develop some improvements to the bridge to make it more attractive to residents and visitors to the village to visit the bridge in line with the neighbourhood plan.
As a result of the work we have undertaken, we have produced the following proposal;
The Parish Council’s proposal is to install a table and benches in the middle of the bridge and two display boards, one each at the ends of the bridge. The display boards will be as follows:
- The history of the Old Bridge
- A listing of the wildlife which can be seen from the bridge on or near the River Tas.
The history of the Old Bridge will be located at the Ipswich Road end of the bridge above one of the bollards. The display board of the wildlife will be above the end piece of the bridge nearest to the electricity substation on Old Street.
Below is information on the proposed display boards and a technical specification of the layout of the two display boards and the table and benches.
We have produced a simple questionnaire asking you to let us know if you agree or disagree with our proposal and, if you disagree, your reasons and suggestions for what we should do instead. You can access the questionnaire here
